Each and every one of our products is 3rd party tested for full spectrum CBD purity and potency by a licensed lab in California. Retail partners are encouraged to request certification because we know that in this emerging market, peace of mind, honesty and quality are queen.
Quality & Legality
Our CBD Apothecary Body Collection was developed by a versed Apothecary with a background in chemistry (she is also an active doula delivering babies on the Central Coast where we are headquartered) using only clean ingredients: organic essential oils, locally sourced botanicals and high-quality full-spectrum triple tested CBD extracted from legal hemp in California by industry professionals in a state-of-the-art facility using a solvent-free CO2 process making it clean enough to be food grade—which makes it safe for sensitive skin. Our manufacturer carries a Quality Seal from the US Hemp Authority.
We ensure our CBD that comes from non-GMO hemp that is expertly grown free of pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers by reviewing each batch testing certificate. After we formulate our products, we then have them individually tested by a certified lab in California to do our due diligence to be sure our products are pure, potent, clean and safe.
Products such as ours that are made from hemp [defined by the Health and Safety code as a "fiber or oilseed crop, or both, that is limited to types of the plant Cannabis Sativa containing no more than three-tenths of 1 percent (.3%) tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) contained in the dried flowering tops"] are not regulated in the Medical Marijuana Bill AB1575 as CBD in this form is not considered a Controlled Substance and are therefore legal for resale.
The Ninth Circuit ruled in 2004 that the sale, production and distribution of CBD oils/products derived from raw material Industrial Hemp are not in violation of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). The Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2016 (P.L. 114-113) (“the Funding Act”) provision at section 763, passed on December 18, 2015, allows CBD products to be shipped across state lines.
In December of 2018, the 2018 Farm Bill is passed by the Senate fully legalizing hemp and CBD “by redefining hemp to include its ‘extracts, cannabinoids and derivatives,’ Congress explicitly has removed popular hemp products -- such as hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD)—from the purview of the CSA. Accordingly, the Drug Enforcement Administration no longer has any possible claim to interfere with the interstate commerce of hemp products.” On December 19th 2018, the 2018 Farm Bill was signed into law making hemp & its extracts legal and removing CBD from the controlled substance list. - Hemp Bill Memo
Q & A
1. What is CBD?
CBD is one of 100 cannabinoids found in Cannabis Sativa (hemp) and according to numerous studies, primarily hailing from Israel and Europe, contains anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant and regenerative properties that work on the cellular level.
2. Is putting CBD on your skin just a fad?
We stay up on our research so you can decide for yourself! Here we go…
Scientists have discovered that our skin has cannabinoid receptors that feed and support the endocannabinoid system (ECS) (1). As we continue to learn more about this newly discovered system, research has shown that the primary role of the endocannabinoid system is, amongst other functions, is to regulate your nervous system, immune system, your organs and fight free-radicals that cause illness (2).
In his published paper TRP Channel Cannabinoid Receptors in Skin Sensation, Homeostasis, and Inflammation, Michael J. Caterina concludes that TRP channels in the skin—that regulate skin health and inflammation—can work as cannabinoid receptors allowing various cannabinoids to potentially alleviate skin diseases and sensory disorders. And more incredible still! By signaling these channels and receptors in the skin with cannabinoids, neurons and other cells travel through the central nervous system supporting homeostasis—balance—in the body (3).
This study is particularly interesting to us because (as as far as we know) mice do not experience the placebo effect. So, a 2015 Italian study on CBD when topically applied to mice daily was discovered to counteracted inflammation, oxidative stress (ie aging) and showed promising neuroprotective (cell health) benefits (4).

3. Is CBD psychoactive?
The best way to answer this is to say that CBD will not get you “high” in the way THC does—i.e. there is no euphoric feeling associated with CBD. CBD used to be categorized as non-psychoactive, and we have espoused this in the past as well, but studies are now coming out that show promising results of using CBD being used as an antipsychotic, thus it is interacting with our brain chemistry. 4. What is the difference between Cannabis and hemp?
Hemp is the label used for Cannabis Sativa strains that contain .3% or less THC, but Cannabis Sativa is still hemp's proper latin classification (Genus & Species). Much like Marijuana is referred to as THC containing strains of Cannabis (Genus) Sativa (Species) and Cannabis (Genus) Indica (Species).
5. Is CBD legal?
CBD oil derived from federally approved Industrial Hemp programs is legal via the Agricultural Act of 2014 & 2018 (Farm Bill).
6. Where do you get your CBD?
Our CBD is extracted in California from non-GMO hemp that is expertly grown free of pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers in a state-of-the-art facility using a solvent-free CO2 process making it clean enough to be food grade—which makes it safe for sensitive skin. We review our CBD batch testing certificates with ever order to ensure purity, and after we formulate our products, we have them individually tested by a certified lab in California to ensure purity, potency and safety. We only use manufacturers who carry the US Hemp Authority quality seal.
7. What does 'full spectrum' mean?
There are three types of CBD available on the legal market: Distillate, Broad Spectrum and Full Spectrum. Essentially, full spectrum (no more than .3% THC) and broad spectrum (0% THC) oil is made from the whole plant, distillate is further refined into a crystalline form that isolates the CBD molecule and does not contain terpenes or other cannabinoids. We use Full Spectrum because it contains all of the other healthy cannabinoids and terpenes that occur naturally in the plant that some studies have shown work synergistically to improve the effectiveness of CBD in the body.
8. Is your CBD cut with anything like other oils?
No. Our CBD is pure full spectrum hemp oil and then we blend it with organic coconut oil or locally sourced organic olive oil to create the bases for our natural products. We take the same approach to all of our ingredients; pure, potent, clean.
9. Can you get CBD from hemp seed oil?
Not really. The lion's share of CBD is found in the flowers, leaves and stalks (what grows above ground), while hemp seed oil only could only potentially contain roughly 25 parts CBD per million (ppm).
10. Are humans the only animals that have an endocannabinoid system (ECS)?
No! Scientists believe the first animal to have an ECS is the regal Sea Squirt, a 600 million year old creature.
